Hobbie-J, named after a Chinese cartoon character, can remember objects for three times longer than other rats and is better at finding its way through mazes.
中国のアニメから名付けられたHobbie-J君、他のネズミよりも3倍長い記憶力を持つため、素早く迷路から抜け出すことが可能です。

The rat, when it was an embryo, was injected with genetic material to boost the NR2B gene which controls memory.
The success brings hope for future dementia patients, as it is thought the gene enhancement could one day be used in a drug treatment for human brain disorders.
そのネズミ君は胎児の状態の時に、記憶力をコントロールするため遺伝物質を促進するNR2B遺伝子を注入されました。
遺伝子増進が人の脳を修復する薬物療法として確立されるという見解に立つなら、この実験の成功は将来的に認知症患者を救う希望を運びます。

Dr Joe Z Tsien, who led the experiment at the Medical College of Georgia, said: “Hobbie-J can remember information for longer. It’s the equivalent of me giving you a telephone number and somehow you remembering it for an hour.
“Our study provides a solid basis for the rationale that the NR2B gene is critical to enhancing memory. That gene could be used for memory-enhancing drugs.”

Dr Tsien undertook a similar experiment on a mouse named Doogie 10 years ago, but thie latest trial shows that memory enhancement can work on different types of mammals, potentially paving the way for human use.
Although it could take decades to develop a safe drug, dementia organisations in the UK welcomed the study.
Andrew Scheuber from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust said: “This research involving rats may lead to new ways to reduce the risk of developing diseases like Alzheimer’s or to ameliorate dementia symptoms.
博士は10年前にもDoogie という名前のネズミで同じ様な実験に着手していますが、この最新の実験では記憶力の増加は他のタイプの哺乳類にも有効で、人に対しても使用出来る可能性を示しています。安全な薬剤を作るためには何十年もかかるかもしれませんが英国の認知症協会はこの研究を歓迎しています。

However, Dr John Hardy, professor of neuroscience at University College London, said the research would not help Alzheimer’s patients because they suffered from dying brain cells, not ineffective ones.

ここんところ脳科学にはまってまして、人の心はどこにあるのだろうかとか、なぜこんなにも個体差ってあるのだろうかとか、どうしてこんなに物覚えが悪いのだろうかとかどうでもいい事ばかり考えてるわけですが、この記事もある意味脳科学の成果です。天才ネズミは他のネズミより記憶力が3倍！うらやましいですね。私にもNR2B遺伝子を打ち込んでくださいみたいな。そして単語がさっぱりわからん…日本語も英語も専門用語はやたらと難解なのは何故???

Teacup pigs, also known as micropigs, are a specially bred mixture of potbellied pigs with the Tamworth, Kune Kune and Gloucester Old Spot breeds.
ティーカップピッグスは(またの名前をマイクロピッグスともいいますが)タムワースポットベリーピッグとタムワース地方のクネクネピッグ(イギリスの豚でそうゆう名前らしい)を特別に交配させてつくられます。

They are very small, weighing 9 ounces at birth and only reaching 65 pounds at full growth. They also never grow much higher than 12 to 16 inches.
Enamored? Well get ready to pay up. These piglets go for upwards of $1,100! As they are highly intelligent and need to be entertained, some breeders will only sell them in pairs, and to people who fit a certain criteria. Because they are considered farm animals, potential owners must also be licensed to keep livestock.

Jane Croft is a breeder who gave up her career in order to breed tea cup pigs full-time. “Demand for micro pigs is soaring and we are inundated with inquiries every day,” said Croft. “It’s amazing how popular they have suddenly become and just how many people want pigs as pets.”

Police find 1,700 animals in car
Police have discovered 1,700 live animals crammed into the boot of a hatchback car in Bari, Italy, during a routine check.

The animals included 216 budgies, 300 white mice, 150 hamsters, 30 Japanese squirrels, six cameleons and more than 1,000 terrapins.

All 1,700 animals were confiscated and sent to nearby zoos while Police investigate the driver for links to animal smuggling.

One of the officers who found the animals said: "He said he planned to sell the terrapins for 20 Euros each which would have made him a fortune.

"There is no doubt those poor animals were suffering in such a small space."

Traffic Police made the discovery when they pulled the vehicle over for a routine car check. The officers were amazed to find the animals in stacked boxes when driver Francesco Lombardo opened the boot.

イタリアのバリで、警官はいつもの見回り中に、生きている１７００匹の動物がトランクの中にぎっしり詰め込まれている車を発見しました。216匹のセキセイインコ、３００匹の白ネズミ、150匹のハムスター、３０匹の日本リス、6匹のカメレオン、そして１０００匹以上の亀。

警官はドライバーの密輸のつながりを調べている一方で、１７００匹全ての動物たちは没収されて近所の動物園に送られました。
その動物を発見した一人の警官は話します：彼は金儲けのためにその亀を1匹２０ユーロ(約2,600円)で売る計画だったんだよ。あんな狭い場所で動物たちが苦しんでたって事は疑う余地もないね。
交通巡査は職務質問のためにその車を路肩に止めた時にその発見をしました。
ドライバーのFrancesco Lombardo がトランクを開けたとき、その中に積み重なった動物の姿を発見して、巡査はとても驚きました。

トランクの中で亀とか大丈夫だったんかなぁ思うけど、みんな動物園におくられたみたいでよかったです。しかしおくられてきた動物園の人もびっくりですよ、いきなり亀1000匹とか。めんどいからいっぺんに密輸しちゃえって思ったのかなぁ。
